This course presents Process-oriented coma work techniques to enhance skills to assist patients and families experiencing challenging physical, emotional, and spiritual processes at end of life; such as pain, delirium, delusions, grief, and coma. Process Work teaches unique non-verbal communication skills for caregivers to connect with and understand patients in out-of-the-ordinary states of consciousness. This course aims to help shift the field of palliative care from focusing primarily on the body to caring for the whole person--mind, body and spirit. This shift offers hope and advocates for a new ethical sensitivity which recognizes deep sentient experiences. The course addresses issues relevant to working with patients, families, and the medical system involved in end of life patient care.

 SACRED ART OF LIVING AND DYING, UNIT 3: HEALING SPIRITUAL PAIN ~
 COMA COMMUNICATION THERAPY with Stan Tomandl & Ann Jacob

  Coma Communication Therapy is based on the sensory grounded tools developed by Amy and Arny Mindell providing access to the deepest and farthest away states of those we are caring for. This work is relieving and growth promoting for everyone involved.

  The Sacred Art of Living and Dying program series mirrors one of the important roles of the Anamcara ( "spiritual midwife" to the dying) especially with respect to spiritual pain. As human beings face the journey towards final release, there are opportunities for growth, relationship, and spiritual connection that often present as patterns of emotional/spiritual distress. There are concrete, well demonstrated ways of alleviating this pain. The premise of the program is that all spiritual pain is ultimately related to the processes of forgiveness, meaning, relatedness, and hope.

  Anyone, regardless of profession, spiritual background, or previous experience is welcome to participate in the core study units offered through the Sacred Art of Living and Dying series. For persons called to support others on their spiritual journey at the end of life, two additional levels of training and supervision invite persons to become Anamcara end of life practitioners. All levels of the Sacred Art of Living and Dying series teach practical skills based on the time tested lessons of history and the science of modern research, applied practically to today’s participants and needs.

  The Sacred Art of Living and Dying is based on the ancient wisdom of leaning into the pain to find transformation, and it is the dying who become our teachers at the end of life.

CAPITAL UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH
 LOVE - COMA COMMUNICATION AND AWARENESS AS A SACRED TRUST
 June 10, 2007  Victoria BC

 It is an honour for us to be included in your gathering this morning.

 We are so grateful to the first peoples whose land we are privileged to be living on.

 How many of you have had moments when you felt isolated and alone with something and yearned for someone to truly SEE you and your need, and yet you felt too inside yourself - to bereft or too shy or too much in shock or grief to reach out for a friend?  Has that happened to anyone beside me?

 Near end of life and in states of altered consciousness, patients’ greatest fear is not necessarily death, but of being left alone and confused with insufficient awareness of themselves and others. Alzheimer’s/dementia, delirium, depression, autism, coma, vegetative state, traumatic brain injury, besides bringing difficulty and grief, are times for special communication techniques furthering patients’ inner work and their meaningful experiences. We will present Process Work techniques, as developed by our mentors Drs. Amy and Arny Mindell, that are specially designed to work when familiar forms of communication are lacking: when people are no longer verbal, or are lost internally, or are loud, agitated, or stubborn. This training can bring relief to staff and family by: teaching skills to pass to family and friends; easing trauma around ethical decisions by obtaining patients’ input, even when delirious or comatose; and by facilitating patients‘ relationships and spiritual connections.

 WORKSHOP BENEFITS:
 1.   Establish easier access to your own centred presence in trying situations;
 2.   Identify sensory grounded cues & blank access interventions to deepen                                 communication;
 3.   Connect through Pacing the Breath & establish binary (yes/no) communication.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Staff from hospices & care homes; students; volunteers; psycho-social workers; body workers; dementia & head injury caregivers, home care workers, spiritual caregivers, & family.

 COMA WORK, ETHICS, AND DRUG LEVELS NEAR DEATH

  Are palliative and nursing home patients being “snowed” too often with too high doses of psychoactive and pain relief medication? What are reasonable alternatives to drugs for working with patients’ and families’ soul suffering end of life processes? How do we as caregivers and family advocate for more awareness with staff and administration, when we feel lower drug levels would be the first step toward relieving soul pain and facilitating a good death?

  What we term the “double state ethic” is supportive, life affirming eldership of all of patients’ wishes; wishes from normal consensus reality states of consciousness, such as expressed by living wills and advance directives, and wishes expressed from within states of altered consciousness.
