COMA COMMUNICATION is our organization
located in Victoria, BC, Canada. We practice coma work as originated by
Drs. Amy and Arnold Mindell. Coma communication means lovingly noticing
and encouraging verbal and nonverbal communication of people in altered
consciousness. We believe that as long as there is breath, there is
consciousness and communication.
"The purpose of life is to know the divine, to be with it and connect
it somehow with other humans, so love is something that organizes
everything we do. Love means openness to all states of consciousness.
Love means openness to a person in the midst of dreaming and coma." ~
Arnold Mindell, Ph D, author of Coma: Key to Awakening.
Coma work is taught under the larger discipline of Process Work, also
known as Process Oriented Psychology. The main North American centre is
the Process Work Institute located in Portland, Oregon. Process Work
operates through the deeply democratic belief that all parts of a
person, the environment, relationships, groups, and the world are
valuable and meaningful. We work with a diversity of issues through
body symptoms, mental and emotional difficulties, relationships,
families, small and large groups, businesses, non government
organizations, systems, politics, and global issues. In Process Work we
rely on finding the seeds of life and growth within difficulties and
diversity.
COMA WORK ORIGINS
Drs. Arnold and Amy Mindell, psychologists working in Zurich,
Switzerland in the 1970’s and 1980’s, developed coma work
from observing and researching how to communicate with people in coma
and other states of altered consciousness. Now living in Oregon in the
United States, they continue to train colleagues and have published two
books on coma. See the Resources section.
We hold immense gratitude for patients and their families who have
taught the Mindells and us and our colleagues so much about altered
consciousness. Many relatives and friends who sit day after day with
loved ones in coma and coma like states will notice many small changes
in behavior, and what those changes are in response to. They have often
half invented coma work by observation, love, and perseverance to their
belief and perceptions that someone is indeed home within the person
lying before them in bed.
